I am very happy with myself and I don't think I will ever write anything better - is what Verdi supposedly said after Rigoletto's opening night. Indeed, he managed to create a work that is timeless both in its lyrical and musical aspects. This masterfully-composed opera - a tragic tale of jealousy, vengeance and sacrifice - was based on Victor Hugo's play Le roi s'amuse. Grand passions and majestic music create a perfect whole here. The famous, deeply ironic song La donna è mobile sung by the Duke of Mantua is one of the greatest operatic pieces of all time.
