CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA / PAGLIACCI P.Mascagni / R.Leoncavallo

The operatic tandem united by the simple story of human passions and tragedy of love betrayal. Executed by renowned artists, representing different generations of directors, i.e. Leszek Mądzik and Krzysztof Ciecheński, it confronts the maturity and youth at its best.

After the success of Cavalleria rusticana, the first verismo opera, Leoncavallo decided to follow the footsteps of its creator. He spread a gossip that the libretto for his Pagliacci had been inspired by a real murder. Then he wrote a two-act opera, which cannot compare to Mascagni's composition but complements it perfectly. Soon afterwards the impresarios of the New York MET connected those short stories about betrayal and revenge into an inextricable opera tandem. Its popularity after some time appeared to be a curse for its authors: the ambitious Mascagni repeated his first triumph never again, and Leoncavallo, embittered by later failures, tried to discredit his own work. In vain. The comedy remained unfinished. Turiddu will be killed tonight once again.
