Conductor, composer, cultural manager.
He was graduated of the Gdańsk Academy of Music with degrees in conducting, music theory, and composition, as well as the Academy of Music in Kraków, where he received a PhD in musicology in 2019. Additionally, he studied in Vienna (University of Music and Performing Arts) and Warsaw. In 2021, he completed postgraduate studies in cultural management at the Warsaw School of Economics.
Already during his studies, he began an active conducting career, frequently performing at his alma mater in Gdańsk, as well as on the stages of the Baltic Opera, the Warsaw Chamber Opera, and conducting concerts for the Pomeranian Music Society in Toruń, where he serves as vice president. He gained experience and honed his skills during numerous masterclasses and by assisting such distinguished artists as Franz Welser-Möst, Marco Guidarini Jacek Kaspszyk, Łukasz Borowicz, Bassem Akiki, Andriy Yurkevych, Tadeusz Kozłowski, Janusz Przybylski, Mirosław Jacek Błaszczyk, and Colin Metters.
As a conductor, he has distinguished himself not only as an outstanding interpreter of operatic works but also of symphonic pieces, performing on stages across the country and abroad. He has collaborated with the Grand Theatre – National Opera in Warsaw, Wrocław Opera, Warsaw Chamber Opera, Baltic Opera, Royal Opera House La Monnaie in Brussels, Grand Theatre in Łódź, Silesian Opera, Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic, National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Sopot Chamber Philharmonic, Łódź Philharmonic, Koszalin Philharmonic, Świętokrzyska Philharmonic, Gorzów Philharmonic, Opole Philharmonic, Baltic Philharmonic, as well as with the Toruń Symphony Orchestra, Beethoven Academy Orchestra, and the Philharmonic in Valletta (Malta).
He has performed with many Polish artists, including Tomasz Konieczny, Konstanty Andrzej Kulka, Janusz Wawrowski, Stanisław Daniel Kotliński, Małgorzata Walewska, Janusz Olejniczak, and Olga Pasiecznik. For years, he has been associated with the Grand Theatre – National Opera and its Opera Academy, as well as with Cappella Gedanensis, a leading ensemble in northern Poland. He was the first Pole to complete a conducting internship at the Salzburg Festival (2016) and held a conducting internship at the Vienna State Opera in 2017-18. To commemorate the 200th birthday of Stanisław Moniuszko, he collaborated with Łukasz Borowicz to stage the opera Halka at the Theater an der Wien (2019). This event was not only recognized as the most significant in the composer's birthday celebrations but also recorded by Polish and Austrian television.
In 2021, he won the competition for the position of director of the Zielona Góra Philharmonic, becoming the youngest person in the country to hold such a position. In addition to his conducting work, a significant aspect of his activities is his arranging work. His orchestral arrangements have been presented on many Polish and international stages (Grand Theatre – National Opera in Warsaw, Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio of Polish Radio, Musikverein in Vienna, Wrocław Opera, Grand Theatre in Poznań) during prestigious events such as the inauguration of the 10th International Stanisław Moniuszko Vocal Competition (Warsaw, 2019) and Norwid's Theatrum Mundi – a concert celebrating the 200th birthday of the poet. These arrangements have also been frequently broadcast on Polish Radio. In 2023, he received the International Opera Awards in the ‘Rediscovered Work’ category for his premiere of Stanisław Moniuszko's opera Jawnuta. He was also nominated for the Coryphaeus of Polish Music Award in 2023 in the ‘Discovery of the Year’ category.
Rafał Kłoczko's compositional output includes dozens of works (chamber, vocal-instrumental, symphonic pieces). These works have been presented in almost all major Polish music centers (Warsaw, Poznań, Wrocław, Kraków, Gdańsk, Bydgoszcz, Szczecin, Toruń) and have been awarded at competitions. He is a laureate of numerous awards and distinctions in composition and conducting competitions, as well as scholarships from prestigious programs such as Composer-in-Residence and Conductor-in-Residence organized by the National Institute of Music and Dance and Young Poland (National Centre for Culture). He has also been a multiple recipient of scholarships from the Marshal's Office of the Pomeranian and Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeships, the City of Gdańsk and Toruń, and the Minister of Culture and National Heritage.
Besides music, his great passions are puzzles and learning languages. He speaks German and English and has been continuing his studies in French, Italian, Portuguese, and Mandarin in recent years.
