Jürgen Franz Kirner lives and works as a freelance stage and costume designer in Berlin. He studied in Kassel, Hamburg and Berlin and worked as an assistant with Robert Wilson, among others.

Since 2001 he has been internationally active with numerous visual works in drama, musical theater and dance, including at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, the Bavarian State Opera and the Bayreuth Festival (Liebesverbot), at the Festspielhaus Salzburg (Tosca and Der fliegende Holländer), as well as theaters in Amsterdam, Antwerp, Bern, St. Gallen, Ljubljana, Zagreb, Belgrade, Vienna, Linz, Graz, Klagenfurt, Montpellier, Trieste, Bolzano, Rome and Tel Aviv.

As an artist in residence at the Goethe-Institut, he traveled to Salvador do Bahia, Brazil.
The works Ruß (2013) and Charlotte Salomon (2015) with choreographer Bridget Breiner at the Ballett im Revier received the German theater prize FAUST. This was followed by L'Oiseau de Feu with Les Grands Ballets des Canadiens and Salome (2023) with the San Francisco Ballet.
