Sue Blane


Sue trained at The Central School of Art and Design, from 1968 to 1971, under the tutorship of Ralph Koltai, the Set Designer of this production. Subsequently she spent two seasons with the Citizens’ Theatre, Glasgow. As a Costume Designer Sue has been collaborating with among others English National Opera, Bayreuth Festival and La Scala. She created the costume designs for some acknowledge opera directors such as David McVicar, Jonathan Miller and Keith Warner.  Sue designed the costumes for the original 1973 production of Rocky Horror Show, and the 1975 film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, as well as for the sequel, Shock Treatment (1981). She created the costumes for the original Vienna production of the musical Dance of the Vampires (1997) directed by Roman Polanski.
Sue was awarded the title of a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2006 for services to Drama, and is a fellow of the Royal Designers for Industry. She was nominated for a 1997 Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance for her design of English National Ballet's Alice in Wonderland and a BAFTA nomination for Peter Greenaway's The Draughtsman's Contract (1982).
