Ralph Koltai


Hungarian by descent, he studied at the Central School of Art and Design in London and became Head of Theatre Design (1965–1972). He has since designed some 250 productions of opera, dance, drama and musical theatre throughout the world, becoming Britain’s senior and most celebrated Theater Designers. Over 100 opera productions include The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahogany for Sadler’s Wells Opera under the guidance of Lotte Lenya and The Ring Cycle (1970 – 1981) for the English Opera Company under Reginald Goodall. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1983 and is an Associate Designer of the Royal Shakespeare Company. He is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Performing Arts, Hong Kong; the University of the Arts, London; Rose Bruford College, Kent; Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts and Royal Society of Art. Next to his set designer activities, Ralph creates bas-relief sculptures and metal collages.
