Michal Štípa

 

After graduating from the Dance Conservatory in Brno in 1998, he became involved in the ballet ensemble of the National Theatre Brno, where he was appointed soloist in 2000. He danced in many roles, especially in the classical repertoire: Prince in Swan Lake, Colas in Caution in Vain, Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, Prince in The Nutcracker, Spartacus in the ball.et of the same name. In the 2004/2005 season, he joined the Ballet of the National Theatre in Prague, where he obtained the status of a soloist, and in 2009 he was appointed the first soloist. The noble appearance, ideal lines and graceful expression place Michal Štípa in the “danseur noble” category, with roles such as Solor in La Bayadère, Prince in Swan Lake, Jean de Brienne in Raymonda, Prince in The Nutcracker and Albrecht in Giselle, Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, Lensky in Onegin by John Cranko, James in La Sylphide, Father in Cinderella by Jean-Christophe Maillot or Prince in Javier Torres' Sleeping Beauty.

He danced in a modern repertoire in choreographies Álbum Familiar by Conny Janssen, Petite Mort and Sinfonietta by Jiří Kylián, Carmen by Mats Ek, In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated by William Forsythe and in choreographies Petr Zuska A Little Extreme (2009), 1. Symfonie D dur (2010), and Brel – Vysockij – Kryl / Solo for three (2007) for which he won the Thalia Award in 2007.
For the 1998/1999 season, he received the Philip Morris Flower Ballet Award, and three years later the main Philip Morris Ballet Flower Award. In 2000, he took part in the Ballet Competition in Brno, where he won the 2nd prize. He was awarded the Thalia Prize for his role as Albert in the ballet Giselle (2005). In 2007, he received the Commercial Bank KOBANADI Award. In the fifth yearly vote of the Opera Plus portal, where the readers' choose the best dance performances Michal Štípa won the Annual Opera Plus Award in the men's category for his role as Father in Stravinsky's Rite of Spring choreographed by Glen Tetley as part of Timeless triptych.

He has also danced on many of the world's leading stages in Germany, Austria, Spain, Finland, Italy, Portugal, Malta, Japan, China, Taiwan, Russia, the USA and South America.
Since 2015, he has been engaged in pedagogical activities. He was at the birth of the Ballet Home Fatals ensemble in Prague. Since 2019, he has been the artistic director of the Moravian Theatre Ballet in Olomouc.

From among his choreographies we should name ballet productions Don Quixote, Giselle, and La Bayadère, he also co-directed and choreographed The Nutcracker – A Christmas Story.
